President Cost to deliver keynote address to Arts Schools Network Conference at Jacksonville University

President Tim Cost ‘81 will present the keynote address “The Changing Face of Art in Higher Education” when the Arts School Network (ASN) Annual Conference comes to Jacksonville University on Thursday, Oct. 24.

The non-profit ASN provides leaders in art schools with quality resources, support, and networking opportunities, including an annual conference. This year, approximately 300 conference attendees will be spending a full day at Jacksonville University highlighted by President Cost’s perspective on the present and future of art in higher education.

From digital innovation and new modes of art dissemination to STEAM, entrepreneurship and the intersection of the arts and healthcare—the landscape of the present and future of art in higher education is broad and interconnected. President Cost shares his unique perspective drawing upon a distinguished career spanning FORTUNE 500 corporate leadership, government affairs, philanthropy and education. President Cost will speak at 8:45 a.m. at Terry Concert Hall.

Inspiring a Gen Z World: Creative Entrepreneurship in the Classroom. Murray McKay, Maryland Institute College of Art, examines the emergence of creative entrepreneurship programs in higher education and leads in-depth discussions on developing lesson plans for collaborative projects on creative entrepreneurship that can be applied directly to the classroom experience. 10:25 a.m., Davis College of Business, Room 174 

Creating Arts Education Access in Marginalized Communities in Baltimore: Successes and Challenges. Tom Askey and Becky Mossing, Baltimore School for the Arts, discuss how they created robust relationships that develop trust in school communities that lead to greater access to public arts education. 10:25 a.m., Frisch Welcome Center

The Ballet Principal Entrance: Brian Palmer and Rhonda Stampalia of Jacksonville University present a lecture-demonstration session with dancers from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and JU programs on the entrance of the principal couple in a ballet. 10:25 a.m. Alexander Brest Dance Pavilion.

Playing with Glass & Fire: Brian Frus, Jacksonville University, presents JU’s glass studio history and provides a live glassblowing art demonstration. 10:25 a.m. & 12:55 p.m., Arts Research Complex, Glass Studio. 

Invisible Barriers: What’s keeping some students out of our classrooms? Carrie Mills, Booker Middle School, discusses the notion of the “hive mind” and provides strategies to enhance the inclusion of marginalized groups of students at their schools. 12:55 p.m., Davis College of Business Room 171 

Creative Strategies for Developing Arts Partnerships: Dr. Kathy Sherler and Baldwin Brown, I.M. Terrell Academy of STEM & Visual and Performing Arts, provide practical tips for the application of partnership strategies in their own communities and lead a brainstorming session in the planning, timeline, and organization of arts partnerships. 12:55 p.m., Davis College of Business Room 174 

Increase Student Engagement Through the Arts: Ashley Brown, SC Arts Commission, dives into why the arts increase student engagement and hope, and what this research means for college and career readiness. 12:55 p.m., Terry Concert Hall     

Connect! Create! Collaborate: Denise Davis-Cotton, Florida Center for Partnerships for Arts-Integrated Teaching (PAInT); Kuniko Yamamoto, Origami Air Art Studio; Dr. Eshan Sheybani, University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee; and Dr. Giti Javidi demonstrate how higher education collaborates with community arts organizations to connect technology and arts and present ways to engage students to use robotics for future careers in autonomous technology, smart manufacturing and ecologically sound industries in K-12 programs. 12:55 p.m., Frisch Welcome Center.
