Frequently Asked Questions

When should I make a tutoring appointment?

Students should sign up to meet with a tutor if they need assistance. Tutoring is not just for students who are struggling in a course; if you have a question about course content, how to complete a homework problem, how to stay organized, how to best prepare for an exam, etc. you can benefit from meeting with a tutor.

Is tutoring available for every course?

We try to make tutoring available for as many courses as possible, but there are some limitations.  At the present time we do not offer tutoring for graduate level courses (numbered 500 and above).

Do I need to make an appointment or can I just show up?

What should I bring to my tutoring session?

You should always have your notes, textbook, homework, and/or any questions that you have about your course to your session. This will help you and your tutor make the most of your session--whether in person or virtual.

What should I do prior to meeting with a tutor to ensure I get the most out of the session?

To make the most of any tutoring session, you should do the following:

  • Attend class
  • Take notes during class
  • Read assigned material
  • Try homework problems
  • Bring relevant material and questions

What should I expect to do/to happen during a tutoring session?

You and your tutor will meet one on one to work on your questions. You should expect to actively participate in the session by:

  • Asking questions for clarification
  • Taking notes to refer to later
  • Answer questions the tutor may ask
  • Demonstrate knowledge of what you’ve covered with your tutor during the session

Please Note: Tutors will not assist with graded assignments or take-home exams.

All tutoring sessions can last up to 50 minutes. However, you are not required to stay the full time if you only have a few questions or finish early.

Does the ASC have an academic integrity policy?

All students involved in a tutoring session (both the tutor and the tutee) are expected to abide by all policies outlined in the Jacksonville University Academic Integrity & Misconduct Policy, as well as the Green Pages Code of Conduct. Any behavior that violates these policies may result in no longer being able to utilize tutoring at the Academic Support Center. In particular, any student who offers to pay an ASC tutor to complete an assignment, test, and/or course for that student, will prohibited from attending tutoring sessions for the remainder of that semester, and possibly the entire academic year.
