Nurse Corps
Lead in Healthcare with Navy Nursing
The NROTC Navy Nurse Scholarship is a specialized program designed for students pursuing a nursing career while committing to serve as officers in the Navy Nurse Corps. This scholarship covers tuition, fees, and other educational expenses, offering a seamless path to becoming a nurse officer in the U.S. Navy. Midshipmen in the program attend nursing school while fulfilling NROTC duties alongside normal Navy and Marine option Midshipmen. Upon completion of their degree, they are commissioned as Navy officers in the Navy Nurse Corps, providing medical care to Sailors, Marines, and their families.
Summer Training
Navy Nurse Option Midshipmen have unique summer training opportunities tailored to the medical nature of their future roles. After attending NSI with the rest of the NROTC Midshipmen, their training diverges to focus on healthcare. Unlike other Midshipmen, they do not have a 3/C cruise. For their 2/C cruise, they spend approximately a month onboard a ship, working with the ship’s medical department and gaining firsthand experience alongside corpsmen. During their 1/C cruise, they are assigned to a shore-based hospital, where they shadow Navy nurses. These training opportunities take place at various locations across the U.S. and overseas.
Commissioning
Before commissioning, Nurse Option Midshipmen are ranked nationally based on merit and select their first hospital assignment. After commissioning, Navy Nurse Corps Officers will take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). They will report to their assigned hospital and go through the Nurse Residency Program. This is a 2 month program during which the nurse is oriented to the hospital and rotates through the different units. The nurse is then assigned to a unit and has a 3 month orientation.
